W. E. Gardner
W.E. Gardner (1897-1977) grew up in Camden, Ind., but for many years
lived in St. Louis, Mo., where he worked for the Wabash Railroad. He
returned to Camden after retiring in the 1960s. William Gardner had
painted since his youth, but his career as an artist began in earnest
after his retirement. He worked in watercolor and oil, and his favorite
subject was the Carroll County countryside. The artist also produced
some paintings during travels to California and Michigan, but the
majority of his works are from his native Indiana. |

Inez Bolinger
Inez Russell Bolinger (1887-1967) lived in Warsaw, Ind., and many of her
works are of scenes in Kosciusko County. She studied at the Herron Art
School in Indianapolis with such important Hoosier artists as William
Forsyth, Wayman Adams and Homer Davisson. Her participation in the 1934
Hoosier Salon exhibition in Chicago, Ill., brought her notice. Indiana
art critic Clara Sackett called her “one of Indiana’s outstanding
artists.” In the 1940s Mrs. Bolinger became interested in sculpture but
continued painting. She exhibited in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Ind.,
Tampa and Miami, Fla., and Houston, Texas. She was a member of the
National League of American Pen Women and took part in the
organization’s annual shows in Washington, D.C. |
